Behind The Scenes

Gavin has been a self-taught wood carver since 2008.  Over the years Gavin has sculpted many unique wood pieces throughout the Pacific Northwest. In 2016 Gavin became completely fascinated with Krampus the ancient, mythical creature from Bavarian, European tradition, and many of the Austrian artists behind carving these traditional wooden masks.

Through this fascination, he reached out and was inspired by the work of Arthur Moinat/Moinat Masken. Arthur was kind enough to share some of his techniques used in creating his custom masks that Gavin is still currently using today.

Gavin’s Craft

Gavin uses materials such as locally sourced Ponderosa Pine from hazardous and dead trees. Saws all his own lumber at his home sawmill. Each mask starts from a structurally sound clear wood Pine block made in his wood shop.

After hearing each customer’s vision for their mask he uses a variety of authentic animal horns, inset acrylic eyes, and each mask is hand painted and detailed to the customers desire. Traditional hides and fur are finally added allow for the most authentic style mask possible. Gavin is devoted to honoring the tradition by offering the highest quality mask that you can wear and enjoy for years to come.
